The AI tools available to researchers and journal editors have changed faster in the last two years than in the previous decade. And that’ll keep getting faster. It’s pretty overwhelming and most researchers and journal editors have impending feelings of getting behind, of FOMO, and of their own place in all this tech.

Submission platforms now screen for integrity issues before a manuscript reaches an editor. AI assistants can synthesize a hundred papers in the time it used to take to read five. Plagiarism detection has expanded to catch AI-generated text, paraphrased content, and fabricated data in images. And the analytics available after publication give journals a far more granular picture of how their work is landing in the world.

This list maps the tools that matter across every stage of that workflow – for researchers preparing and submitting work, and for editors managing the process from intake to publication. Some of these tools you’ll already know. Others are newer, more specialized, or simply underused outside the communities that built them. The list is organized by task, so you can go straight to what’s relevant.

1. Manuscript submission and workflow management

Submission platforms do more than accept manuscripts. The better ones now handle technical compliance checks, open access eligibility, and identity verification before a manuscript reaches an editor’s queue. For researchers, that means faster, cleaner submissions with fewer desk rejections for fixable reasons. For editors, it means less triage time on preventable problems.

They vary considerably in cost, flexibility, and how well they integrate with external tools. The first two platforms below dominate the market but carry enterprise pricing to match. If budget is a constraint, the open-source options are more capable than they used to be.

  • ScholarOne – ScholarOne is one of the most widely used submission and peer review platforms in academic publishing. It handles the full editorial workflow and integrates with Web of Science, ORCID, and Crossref Similarity Check for integrity screening at submission.
  • Editorial Manager – Editorial Manager is Aries Systems’ flagship platform, used by thousands of journals across disciplines. It covers submission, peer review, production tracking, and author communication, with strong reporting tools for editors managing high submission volumes.
  • Benchpress2 – Benchpress2 is built for biomedical journals and handles the full submission-to-decision cycle. Its automated technical checks flag common formatting and file issues before they reach an editor’s queue.
  • Manuscript Manager – Manuscript Manager is a cloud-based editorial platform used mainly by society journals. Its interface is lighter than the enterprise platforms, which makes it easier to configure and maintain for smaller editorial teams.
  • Open Journal Systems (OJS) – OJS is the Public Knowledge Project’s open-source platform and the backbone of a large share of the world’s independent and society journals. It’s free, actively maintained, and extensible – the tradeoff is that setup and customization require some technical capacity.
  • Scholastica – Scholastica offers submission management, open access publishing, and peer review tools in a clean, modern interface.   • Morressier Journal Management – Morressier started in conference publishing and has expanded into journal management. It handles submissions, reviews, and publishing workflows, with particular strength in connecting conference content to journal pipelines.
  • EasyChair – EasyChair is used primarily for conference submissions but has expanded into journal workflows. It’s widely recognized across computer science and engineering communities.
  • Kriyadocs – Kriyadocs focuses on the production end of the publishing workflow, using AI to speed up typesetting, formatting, and XML conversion. It’s built for publishers that need to reduce the time between acceptance and publication.
  • ChronosHub – ChronosHub connects journals to funder open access policies and transformative agreements. For editors at journals navigating complex OA compliance requirements, it automates much of the verification work.
  • Atypon (Literatum) – Literatum is Atypon’s publishing platform, widely used by major publishers and learned societies. It handles journal hosting, content delivery, and subscription management at scale.
  • ARPHA – ARPHA is Pensoft’s end-to-end authoring, review, and publishing platform. It supports collaborative writing directly in the browser and outputs publication-ready XML, which reduces conversion work at the production stage.
  • Cofactor – Cofactor, developed by Springer Nature, offers a suite of pre-submission tools that help authors check their manuscript for scope fit, figure quality, and reporting standards before they submit.
  • Submittable – Submittable is a flexible submission management platform used across academic, creative, and grant contexts. It’s more configurable than dedicated journal platforms, which makes it useful for journals with non-standard workflows.
  • F1000Research – F1000Research publishes immediately after basic checks, with open peer review conducted after publication. Referee reports and author responses are published alongside the article, making the review record fully transparent.
  • PubPub – PubPub is an open-source platform for community-led publishing. It supports structured peer review, rich media, and version tracking, and is used by university presses and independent research communities that prioritize open infrastructure.
  • Evera – Evera uses AI to screen manuscripts for scope fit and technical compliance before peer review begins. It reduces the manual triage load for editors at journals with high submission volumes.
  • Janeway – Janeway is an open-source journal management platform developed at Birkbeck, University of London. It covers submission, review, and publication, with a clean interface and active development community.
  • eJournalPress – eJournalPress is a submission and peer review platform used by a range of society and independent journals. It offers customizable workflows and strong customer support for smaller editorial teams.
  • Open Preprint Systems – Open Preprint Systems, from the Public Knowledge Project, is a dedicated preprint server platform. It handles the full preprint life cycle, from submission and moderation through to versioning and eventual journal transfer, and integrates with OJS for journals that operate both a preprint and a formal review stream.
  • MARS – MARS (Manuscript Archiving and Reviewing System) is a lightweight submission and review platform used by smaller journals. It prioritizes simplicity and ease of use for editorial teams that don’t need enterprise-level infrastructure.

2. Finding and managing peer reviewers

Finding qualified reviewers is one of the most time-consuming parts of the editorial job, and declining response rates have made it harder. For researchers, being matched with the right reviewer – one who actually knows the subfield rather than just the broad discipline – also leads to more substantive feedback.

These tools approach the problem from different angles: some use semantic matching, some mine citation networks, some tap patent databases. The right reviewer for an interdisciplinary paper is often not who you’d find with a simple keyword search.

  • Reviewer Finder (Web of Science) – Clarivate’s Reviewer Finder uses Web of Science publication data to surface reviewer candidates based on topical relevance and citation history. It integrates directly into ScholarOne workflows for journals already on that platform.
  • Prophy – Prophy uses AI to match manuscripts with peer reviewers, drawing on a database of over 160 million articles. Its suite covers reviewer matching, research impact tracking, and editorial board management.
  • GlobalCampus – GlobalCampus uses AI-assisted reviewer matching with a focus on diversity – geographic, career stage, and institutional – alongside topical relevance. It’s a practical option for journals trying to broaden their reviewer pool beyond the usual networks.
  • Web of Science Reviewer Locator – Web of Science Reviewer Locator generates ranked reviewer recommendations from WoS publication data. It works across disciplines and can be integrated into existing editorial workflows.
  • Reviewer Recommender (Editorial Manager) – Editorial Manager’s built-in reviewer recommender analyzes manuscript metadata and publication records to suggest candidates. For journals already on the platform, it removes the need for a separate reviewer discovery tool.
  • JANE – JANE takes a paper’s title or abstract and compares it against millions of PubMed entries to surface authors with relevant expertise. It’s a fast, no-login option for casting a wide reviewer net.
  • DeSci Reviewer Finder – DeSci’s AI-powered tool scores manuscripts for novelty and surfaces conflict-free reviewers from a database of 250 million papers. The novelty scoring adds a layer of context that most reviewer-finding tools don’t offer.
  • ReviewerConnect (Taylor & Francis) – ReviewerConnect is Taylor & Francis’s internal reviewer management system. It’s available to journals published under the T&F umbrella and uses publication history and reviewer performance data to improve match quality.
  • Iris.ai – Iris.ai uses AI to map the conceptual content of a manuscript and find researchers working on closely related problems. It works well for interdisciplinary submissions where keyword searches tend to miss the right people.
  • Scilit – Scilit is MDPI’s comprehensive database, indexing over 184 million publications. Editors can use it to find and contact experts across a broad range of fields.
  • Hexaly – Hexaly (formerly LocalSolver) is an optimization engine used by larger publishers to solve the reviewer assignment problem at scale. It matches available reviewers to manuscripts while factoring in workload distribution and conflict of interest constraints.
  • Cypris – Cypris searches patent databases alongside academic literature, which makes it useful for identifying reviewers in applied research fields where expertise is split between academic and commercial contexts.
  • Expert Lookout – Expert Lookout surfaces potential reviewers by analyzing citation networks and co-authorship patterns. It’s designed for editors who want to move beyond obvious candidates to find reviewers at the edge of the relevant literature.
  • Scholarcy – Scholarcy uses AI to summarize and extract structured data from academic papers. For editors, it can accelerate the reviewer identification process by quickly surfacing the key authors and findings in a manuscript’s reference list.
  • Synapse – Synapse is a data-sharing platform developed by Sage Bionetworks, primarily used in biomedical and data science research. It supports collaborative research workflows and can help identify active researchers in specific technical areas.
  • Research Rabbit – Research Rabbit visualizes citation networks as interactive maps, making it easier to identify clusters of researchers working on related problems. It’s a useful complement to database-driven reviewer searches.
  • SciVal – SciVal is Elsevier’s research performance platform, built on Scopus data. It lets editors analyze research output by topic, institution, and geography – useful for identifying reviewer candidates in regions or institutions that are underrepresented in your current pool.
  • PubShield – PubShield screens manuscripts and reviewer profiles for integrity risks, including paper mill indicators and citation manipulation. It helps editors verify that both submissions and reviewer invitations aren’t part of coordinated misconduct rings.

3. Ethical compliance and detecting plagiarism

Plagiarism detection used to mean running a similarity check and reading the report. That’s no longer enough. AI-generated text, paraphrased plagiarism, and coordinated paper mill submissions each require different detection approaches.

For researchers, many of these tools also serve as a pre-submission sanity check – flagging unintentional similarities before they become a problem. The tools below cover the full range, from the institutional standards most major publishers already use to newer AI-specific detectors. Quality varies, and no single tool catches everything.

  • iThenticate – iThenticate is Turnitin’s tool built for researchers and publishers rather than institutions. It checks manuscripts against a large database of published content and is the standard tool used by many major publishers for pre-publication screening.
  • Turnitin – Turnitin draws on a database from publishers including Elsevier and Springer Nature for thorough plagiarism checks. It also detects AI-generated text, though independent tests have flagged inconsistencies in its AI detection accuracy.
  • QuillBot – A QuillBot subscription gets you a plagiarism checker and AI text detector alongside its other writing tools. The Google Chrome extension lets you use those features on any website without switching tabs.
  • Copyscape – Copyscape is a web-based plagiarism checker that searches the live internet rather than a proprietary database. It’s most useful for flagging content that has been published online – blog posts, grey literature, or web-based preprints – rather than journal articles.
  • GPTZero – GPTZero focuses on detecting AI-generated text in manuscripts. Independent public tests have rated it above most competitors, which makes it a reasonable standalone add-on. It holds several security certifications.
  • Copyleaks – Copyleaks detects both standard plagiarism and AI-generated text, including paraphrased plagiarism that older similarity-checking tools miss. It handles multiple languages, which matters for internationally submitted manuscripts.
  • Originality.ai – Originality.ai combines plagiarism detection with AI content identification and readability scoring. It’s a practical all-in-one option for editorial teams that want to run a single check rather than layer multiple tools.
  • Winston AI – Winston AI specializes in detecting AI-generated content and is regularly updated to track the outputs of newer model versions. It generates a confidence score alongside a sentence-level breakdown, which gives editors more context than a single percentage.
  • ZeroGPT – ZeroGPT is a free AI detection tool that returns a percentage estimate of AI-generated content in a submitted text. It’s a quick first-pass option, though its accuracy is less consistent than paid alternatives.
  • Crossref Similarity Check – Crossref Similarity Check is a publisher-facing service powered by iThenticate. It lets member publishers screen manuscripts against a database of published content and is one of the most widely used integrity checks in peer-reviewed publishing.
  • Scribbr – Scribbr’s plagiarism checker is primarily aimed at students and researchers rather than publishers. It cross-references against a broad academic database and returns a detailed source-level report.
  • PlagScan – PlagScan is part of the Turnitin family via the Ouriginal acquisition and has been widely used in Europe for its GDPR compliance. Note that Turnitin ended PlagScan’s private plans in 2025; if your journal was using it independently, check whether your institutional access is still active.
  • Quetext – Quetext uses what it calls DeepSearch technology to flag subtle plagiarism that hasn’t yet been indexed by the major databases. It catches more than a standard similarity check on recently published or preprint material.
  • CheckForAI – CheckForAI runs detection across multiple AI models simultaneously and returns a blended confidence score. It’s a useful second opinion when results from a single detector are ambiguous.
  • Pangram – Pangram is an AI detection tool built specifically for higher education and publishing. It analyzes writing patterns using perplexity and burstiness metrics to distinguish machine-generated text from human writing, and provides sentence-level explanations rather than a single document score.
  • Paper Mill Alarm (Clear Skies) – Paper Mill Alarm is a tool developed by Clear Skies that screens manuscripts for the hallmarks of paper mill production – generic author lists, templated writing patterns, and implausible institutional affiliations. It’s designed to complement, not replace, standard plagiarism screening.
  • SynthID – SynthID is Google DeepMind’s watermarking system for AI-generated content. It embeds imperceptible signals into text produced by Google’s models, giving editors a way to verify whether a submission was generated by those systems even after editing.
  • Crossplag – Crossplag combines plagiarism detection and AI text identification in a single affordable check. It’s a practical option for editorial assistants or society journals that need dual-function screening without a major contract.
  • Uniccheck – Uniccheck is a cloud-based plagiarism checker with LMS integrations and a clean reporting interface. It’s used primarily in academic institutions and offers batch processing, which suits journals that run screening on multiple submissions at once.

4. Verifying authors and reviewers

Author and reviewer verification has become a more serious task as fake identities, fabricated affiliations, and compromised editorial boards have grown into documented problems. For researchers, these same tools serve a different purpose: building a verified, persistent digital record that travels with you across name changes, institutional moves, and career transitions.

A researcher’s name and institution alone aren’t enough for either side to rely on. These tools let you cross-check claims against persistent identifier systems, publication records, and institutional registries – often in a few minutes.

  • ORCID – ORCID provides persistent digital identifiers for researchers. A verified ORCID profile connects a researcher’s identity to their publication record across institutions and name changes – it’s the closest thing academic publishing has to a universal researcher ID.
  • Publons – Clarivate acquired Publons in 2017 and merged it into Web of Science in 2022 – it no longer exists as a standalone platform. Researcher profiles and review records are now accessible through Web of Science.
  • Scopus Author Search & Identifier – Scopus Author Profiles aggregate publication history, citation counts, and institutional affiliations. The Author Identifier is useful for verifying that a claimed author profile is consistent with the submission’s content and declared expertise.
  • Google Scholar – Google Scholar profiles give you quick access to a researcher’s publication history and citation metrics. Aside from verifying credentials, you can also use it to search for reviewers or cross-check text against published work.
  • ResearchGate – ResearchGate’s profiles aggregate publications, preprints, and research questions. It’s less authoritative than ORCID or Scopus but gives a quick read on a researcher’s activity and institutional connections.
  • Sciscore – Sciscore scans manuscripts for the completeness and accuracy of scientific reporting – antibody identifiers, cell line authentication, statistical reporting, and ethics statements. It helps editors verify that key methodological claims meet community standards.
  • Ringgold – Ringgold, now part of Copyright Clearance Center, assigns persistent identifiers to institutions rather than individuals. It lets you verify that an author is genuinely affiliated with the institution they’ve listed, which helps catch fabricated affiliations.
  • Clarivate ResearcherID – ResearcherID is Clarivate’s persistent identifier for researchers, integrated with Web of Science. It connects a researcher’s identity to their indexed publications and is one of the identifiers used in ScholarOne reviewer profiles.
  • LinkedIn – LinkedIn is not an academic tool, but a researcher’s professional profile can confirm current institutional affiliation, career history, and connections to co-authors – all useful when other identifiers are absent or incomplete.
  • Academia.edu – Academia.edu hosts self-reported researcher profiles and paper uploads. It’s less formally verified than ORCID or Scopus but can be a useful cross-reference when checking whether a claimed researcher has a visible academic presence.
  • Impactstory – Impactstory aggregates altmetric data on a researcher’s publications – social shares, policy mentions, blog coverage, and more. It’s useful for getting a picture of how a researcher’s work lands outside formal citation channels.
  • The Lens – The Lens is a free, open database that integrates scholarly and patent data. For engineering and industrial research, it can help you verify authors whose work spans both academic and commercial contexts.
  • Semantic Scholar – Semantic Scholar uses AI to extract and link research concepts across its database of over 200 million papers. Author profiles are generated automatically from publication records, which makes it useful for quick cross-referencing.
  • OpenAlex – OpenAlex is a fully open bibliographic database covering works, authors, institutions, and concepts. It’s the open alternative to Scopus and Web of Science for editors who need programmatic access to publication records.
  • OpenReview ID – OpenReview is a platform for transparent, open peer review. Its author and reviewer profiles are useful for verifying identities and review histories in fields – particularly machine learning – where OpenReview is the primary venue.
  • DBLP – DBLP indexes computer science publications and maintains clean, deduplicated author records. For editors at CS and AI journals, it’s one of the most reliable sources for verifying publication history.
  • ISNI – The International Standard Name Identifier assigns a persistent, globally unique identifier to individuals across the creative and academic sectors. It’s particularly useful for verifying authors whose names appear in multiple forms across different publishing contexts.
  • Zenodo ID – Zenodo is CERN’s open repository for research data and software. Researchers who deposit data and code here receive persistent DOIs, and their contributor profile gives editors a way to verify data availability claims and open science commitments.
  • Figshare ID – Figshare is a data and figure repository that assigns DOIs to uploaded research outputs. An author’s Figshare profile can confirm data availability claims and provides a record of shared research outputs outside journal articles.
  • Researcher.life – Researcher.life is an AI-powered platform for researchers that includes manuscript preparation, journal matching, and professional profile management. Its profile aggregation features can help cross-check author identity and publication history.

5. Impact tracking and analytics

Citation counts are still the metric most people reach for, but they don’t tell the full story. A paper can be highly cited and largely ignored by policymakers, or gain traction on social media months after publication with no corresponding citation uptick. For researchers, these tools show how your work is actually being used and discussed – not just how often it gets cited. For editors, they give a more granular picture of which articles are gaining traction and in which communities.

  • PlumX Metrics – PlumX tracks five categories of activity beyond citations: usage, captures, mentions, social media, and citations. The breadth of categories gives a fuller picture of how an article is traveling beyond formal citation channels.
  • Crossref – Crossref is the DOI registration agency for scholarly content. Its metadata and citation APIs are the backbone of much of the scholarly analytics ecosystem – any tool tracking citations or linking research outputs ultimately relies on Crossref data.
  • Altmetric – Altmetric tracks online attention to research across news outlets, policy documents, social media, and citation databases. The Altmetric Attention Score is a single number that aggregates these signals, with a breakdown available for each source type.
  • Dimensions – Dimensions is a linked research database covering publications, grants, patents, clinical trials, and policy documents. It’s particularly useful for tracing how research translates into funded projects, commercial applications, and policy influence.
  • Journal Citation Reports – JCR is Clarivate’s annual report on journal-level citation metrics, including Impact Factor and Eigenfactor. It’s the standard reference for comparing journal performance and is used by researchers when deciding where to submit.
  • Scite.ai – Scite.ai goes beyond citation counts by showing how a paper was cited – whether the citing paper supported, contrasted, or simply mentioned the finding. That context changes how you interpret a paper’s influence.
  • TrendMD – TrendMD is a content recommendation engine for scholarly articles. When embedded in a journal’s website, it surfaces related papers to readers – driving traffic to published articles and giving editors data on which content is generating downstream engagement.
  • Kudos – Kudos helps researchers explain and share their published work. Authors create plain-language summaries and share them across platforms; journals using the Kudos platform can track which sharing activity is driving full-text downloads and citations.
  • CiteScore (Elsevier) – CiteScore is Elsevier’s citation metric for journals, calculated from Scopus data. It covers a broader range of document types than Impact Factor and is updated annually. It’s a useful data point when benchmarking journal performance.
  • Paperguide – Paperguide uses AI to help researchers find, analyze, and manage literature. Its analytics features track how frequently specific papers appear in searches and reading lists, giving a proxy measure of pre-citation interest.
  • Eigenfactor – Eigenfactor scores journals based on the full network of citations rather than raw counts – a citation from a highly-cited journal carries more weight. It’s a free alternative to Impact Factor for comparing journal influence.
  • Plum Analytics – Plum Analytics, now part of Elsevier, tracks five categories of activity: usage, captures, mentions, social media, and citations. The breadth of categories gives a fuller picture of how an article is traveling beyond formal citations.
  • Overleaf – Overleaf is the dominant collaborative LaTeX editor in academic publishing. While primarily a writing tool, its integration with journal submission systems and its usage data across institutions make it a window into where active research is being written.
  • Clarivate InCites – InCites is Clarivate’s benchmarking and analytics platform for research institutions and journals. It draws on Web of Science data to compare output, citation impact, and collaboration patterns at journal and field level.
  • Sage Policy Profiles – Sage Policy Profiles tracks when research is cited in policy documents, parliamentary debates, and think tank reports. It’s useful for journals that want to demonstrate their content’s reach beyond academia.
  • SciVal – SciVal is Elsevier’s research benchmarking tool, built on Scopus data. Editors can use it to track topic trends, benchmark journal performance against competitors, and identify emerging research areas for future special issues.
  • WorldCat – WorldCat aggregates library holdings from institutions worldwide. For journals, library adoption data is a measure of how broadly content is being acquired and made available – distinct from download counts or citations.

6. AI-based tools

The AI tool landscape has moved well past ChatGPT. Researchers and editors now have access to purpose-built research assistants, closed-corpus synthesis tools, real-time claim verification engines, and large language models with context windows big enough to hold multiple full manuscripts at once. For researchers, the most useful tools in this category reduce literature review time dramatically and help stress-test arguments before submission.

For editors, they speed up manuscript assessment without replacing the judgment call. None of these tools are interchangeable – each has a specific strength, and the people getting the most out of them have matched the right tool to the right task.

  • Penelope.ai – Penelope.ai screens manuscripts before peer review for completeness, ethical compliance, statistical reporting, and journal fit. It gives editors a structured pre-review report and helps authors identify gaps before they submit.
  • Aether Brain – Aether Brain is an AI research assistant that synthesizes literature and surfaces connections across papers. It’s built for researchers navigating large bodies of evidence rather than for editorial workflow automation.
  • Elicit – Elicit extracts structured data from academic papers – study design, sample size, outcomes, effect sizes – and organizes the results in a table. It’s particularly useful for systematic review work, where manual data extraction is the main bottleneck.
  • Humata.ai – Humata.ai lets you upload documents and query them in natural language. For editors handling long manuscripts or reviewers working through dense methods sections, it’s a faster alternative to linear reading.
  • Perplexity – Perplexity is an AI-powered search engine that returns cited answers rather than a list of links. For editors looking to quickly verify a claim or find context for an unfamiliar topic, it’s faster than a standard web search and returns a readable summary with sources.
  • Gemini (Google) – Google’s Gemini models have strong integration with Google Workspace tools, which makes them practical for editors already working in Google Docs or Gmail. Gemini 1.5 Pro’s long context window handles full manuscript-length documents.
  • Claude (Anthropic) – Many editors favor Claude for its natural, readable output and large context window. You can upload multiple long manuscripts at once and ask it to compare arguments, flag methodological inconsistencies, or draft structured summaries.
  • Grok (xAI) – Grok is xAI’s large language model with real-time access to posts on X (formerly Twitter). For tracking live academic discourse and pre-publication discussions, it offers a signal that most other LLMs don’t.
  • DeepSeek – DeepSeek performs well on technical summarization and has been used to clean up messy OCR output from older digitized manuscripts. It’s an efficient option when you need accurate text processing without heavy computational overhead.
  • NotebookLM (Google) – NotebookLM lets you upload a set of documents and ask questions across all of them simultaneously. For editors reviewing multiple manuscripts on a related topic, or researchers synthesizing a reading list, it keeps responses grounded in the uploaded sources rather than general web knowledge.
  • Consensus – Consensus is a search engine that queries academic papers directly and returns evidence-based answers with citations. It’s particularly useful for quickly checking whether a claim in a manuscript is consistent with the broader literature.
  • SciSpace – SciSpace combines a literature search engine with an AI assistant that can explain and summarize papers in plain language. Its Ask SciSpace feature lets you query a paper or a corpus of papers without leaving the reading interface.
  • R Discovery – R Discovery is a literature discovery app that uses AI to recommend papers based on your reading history and research interests. It’s designed for researchers who want to stay current across a field without manually monitoring multiple databases.
