ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and DeepSeek can suggest journals for your manuscript in seconds. They’ll read your abstract, understand your field, and recommend publication venues with reasons. Compared with dedicated journal finder tools, you have more control over the output, can revise your query again and again, request tables and different formats for output, and really are limited only by your imagination.
That said, LLMs are notorious fabricators (liars/hallucinators), so you do need to double-check, of course. They also aren’t likely to know which journals are credible and which aren’t. ⚠️Be careful with that!
Use AI for initial brainstorming. Use a proper journal finder for more reliable responses. Verify everything through DOAJ, Web of Science, Scopus, and Think Check Submit. (You can also go back to your LLM to organize your journal search – a topic we really should write another post on).

How to prompt AI for journal recommendations
Start simple. Paste your abstract and ask: “Suggest suitable journals for this abstract: [your abstract].” You’ll get a list in seconds. One researcher did exactly this with ChatGPT and got back the journal where they eventually published, plus several other solid options.
But you can do better with specific prompts.
Include your requirements upfront. Instead of “suggest journals,” try “suggest oncology journals with quick review times and low article processing charges for this abstract.” The AI will filter its suggestions accordingly.
Treat it like a conversation. Ask for a broad list first, then narrow down. Follow up with “Which of these are open access?” or “Which have the highest acceptance rates?” This multi-turn approach helps you evaluate options systematically.
Give context for interdisciplinary work. If your research crosses fields, say so. “My paper combines nanotechnology and immunology for cancer drug delivery. Which journals fit?” helps the AI consider journals spanning both domains instead of defaulting to one or the other.
Assign a role and structure your request. Advanced prompting produces much better results. Something like, “You’ a’re an experienced journal editor in [field]” or “Act as a publishing consultant specializing in [area].” Then provide clear sections: research context, requirements, constraints, and desired output format. See the detailed examples below for templates you can adapt.
Know what you’re working with. Standard ChatGPT (as of this writing) has a knowledge cutoff and doesn’t browse the live web by default, but you can simply turn on that option (which you should). Gemini integrates with Google Search. Claude offers web search and research features. There’s also Perplexity but, honestly, I’ve found that to be the biggets BS-er of them all.
*If you need current information about a new journal or recent policy changes, use an AI with web access.
Consider pasting your full abstract. You can paste your complete abstract directly into the prompt rather than describing your research. This gives the AI more context and often produces better journal matches. However, consider the security implications first:
- Pre-publication confidentiality: If your research contains unpublished findings, proprietary methods, or sensitive data, pasting your abstract may expose it before publication
- Training data concerns: OpenAI states that ChatGPT conversations may be used to improve their models unless you opt out in settings. Gemini and Claude have similar policies with varying retention periods
- Institutional policies: Some universities and research institutions prohibit sharing unpublished research with third-party AI services. Check your institution’s guidelines
- Patent considerations: If your research has patent implications, exposing methods or findings before filing could jeopardize patent rights
Safe approach: paste abstracts for non-sensitive research, published work, or when your institution allows it. For sensitive work, describe your research in general terms without specific methodologies or unpublished findings.

Deep research features: ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude
All three major AI platforms offer extended research modes that browse the web in real time. They take 5-60 minutes to generate comprehensive reports with citations. None of them solves the fundamental problems with using AI for journal selection, but they do give a more accurate and insightful report. You can also expand the report to advise you both on the journal search process and on important things like sending pre-submission queries, considering less-obvious journal choices, drafting your manuscript, peer review, etc.

What these research modes can and can’t do
They all browse the web in real time. They access open-access repositories like arXiv, SSRN, and PubMed Central. They read publisher websites and synthesize information from dozens of sources. They generate structured reports with proper citations.
They can’t access paywalled content. No Elsevier, Springer Nature, or Wiley unless it’s open access. They can’t query Scopus, Web of Science, or JSTOR subscription databases. They can’t verify whether a journal is actually indexed in DOAJ, Scopus, or Web of Science. They can only search for publicly posted claims about indexing. But there’s plenty out there to supplement what’s inaccessible. So, at least at the earlier search stages, those aren’t limitations.
When to use research features
Use regular chat for quick suggestions when you already know your field’s journals. Use Deep Research when you’re exploring an unfamiliar field or need comprehensive background on publication venues across disciplines. But don’t use either for final verification: that still requires checking official databases.
What AI does well and what it doesn’t
AI works well for:
- Brainstorming keywords and search terms for journal databases
- Suggesting database categories to search (IEEE Xplore, JSTOR, PubMed)
- Explaining general scope areas of well-known journals
- Identifying factors to consider when selecting journals
- Understanding what types of journals publish specific methodologies
AI fails at:
- Providing accurate, current journal recommendations (cannot reliably identify predatory journals)
- Verifying real-time indexing status in Web of Science, Scopus, or PubMed
- Accessing current impact factors or acceptance rate data
- Distinguishing legitimate journals from hijacked versions
- Generating accurate citations (56% are fabricated or contain errors)
Texas A&M University-San Antonio notes that AI chatbots “do not pull from information sources behind paywalls, like many academic journals.” Their training data fundamentally can’t include much of the scholarly literature they’re being asked to recommend.
The cost of submitting to a predatory journal (wasted fees, career damage, permanently tainted research) far exceeds the time required to verify AI output through established channels. So *WARNING* don’t use LLMs alone. But they are a great way to get started, work quickly, and put your findings in whatever format you like.
